Press Release-As part of the International Green Award Foundation's supplier incentive program, Thordon Bearings' COMPAC open seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearing system is offering ship owners a 5% rebate.

Tax rebates are applicable to shipping companies that have obtained Green Award certification and their certified ocean-going or inland watercraft.

This partnership will not only benefit shipowners, but will also help clarify UN Sustainable Development Goal #14-Underwater Life. By using seawater lubricated propeller shaft system instead of oil lubrication system, another form of marine pollution is eliminated.

Anna Galoni, CEO of Thordon Bearings, said: "We are delighted that Thordon Bearings has been accepted as an incentive supplier to incentivize ship owners to eliminate oil emissions from propeller shafting forever! Green Award Foundation's achievements in advancing the clean agenda of the shipping industry It’s amazing."

Once the shipyard pays Thordon Bearings for the complete COMPAC seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearing system for the new ship, 5% of the total value of the COMPAC system will be paid to the shipowner.

Jan Fransen, Executive Director of the Green Award Foundation, said: "We are very grateful to Thordon Bearings for awarding the COMPAC seawater lubricated drive shaft system. This provides a real opportunity for shipowners to build pollution-free ships and obtain the opportunity to eliminate oil drainage from the propeller shaft. The highest point. Of course, preventing oil pollution in our rivers, oceans, and oceans is something we strongly advocate."

As part of the strict certification standards of the Green Award Foundation, ships and their management companies are ranked according to their ability to "exceed" international mandatory requirements in terms of safety, quality and environmental performance.

Although the scope of green award certification requirements for ocean-going vessels and inland vessels is different, the two types of shipowners/operators who operate equipment designed to prevent or reduce pollution can earn additional certification points.

Craig Carter, Director of Marketing and Customer Service at Thordon Bearings, said: "Compared with alternatives, open seawater lubricated stern tubes can earn more points, and higher scores mean more benefits for shipowners and managers."

“Ships that have received Green Award certification are recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world fleet, and operators benefit from various operational, promotional and financial incentives,” he added.

At present, more than 150 port authorities, classification societies, trade agencies, flag states and equipment manufacturers have signed contracts to become incentive suppliers, providing certificate holders with a series of benefits, including reduced equipment and service costs and significant discounts to ports cost.

Thordon Bearings formally signed the plan in August, but since the water-lubricated stern tube bearing standard was added to the requirements in 2004, Thordon Bearings has been actively participating in the Rotterdam-based organization.

"Encourage shipowners to prevent this often overlooked source of marine pollution. Adding an open water-lubricated stern tube arrangement can prevent oil from leaking from the drive shaft, which is technically considered equivalent to oil-lubricated drive shafts, reducing operating costs and significantly This improves the shipowner’s green certificate," Carter said.

To date, more than 280 sea-going vessels and more than 930 inland vessels operated by 44 different management companies have obtained Green Award certification.

During the Europort 2021 trade show in Rotterdam, the Netherlands this week, Thordon Bearings awarded the Green Medal plaque to Thordon Bearings at booth 1101.

Thordon Bearings is a Canadian company that designs and manufactures a full range of journal bearings and sealing systems for marine, clean power generation, pumps and other industrial markets. These products are made of Thordon's proprietary non-metallic polymer materials and are lubricated with water, eliminating the use of oil or grease, which means that there is no risk of oil pollution to our rivers, lakes and oceans. Thordon systems and bearings are sold worldwide through more than 75 agents and distributors.

The Green Award certifies ocean-going tankers and chemical tankers, bulk carriers, LNG and LPG carriers, container ships, offshore vessels, ro-ro ships, inland barges and inland cruise ships. Its evaluation criteria cover environmental, quality and safety aspects, as well as the performance of management and crew. With this comprehensive approach and a diverse team of industry experts supporting the program, the Green Award ensures the actual value of its audit quality and certification. The plan is consistent with the 12 UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that support ESG policies (environmental, social and governance) of global organizations.

The program has more than 150 ports and other maritime-related organizations offering discounts to certified companies and ships. The program incentivizes shipowners and managers to invest in ship and shore improvements, and provides a reliable corporate society for participating shipping companies Liability and risk reduction tools, port and maritime service providers.
